This last weekend I went on a bike ride with my 8 year old nephew. He was a chatty cathy , like usual, and commented spoke on random curious sites during our ride. One of the things he said to me was “I like the culture of butterflies.” This thought caught me off guard, as it is slightly random coming out of the mind of an 8 year old who normally talks about the cool dump truck or dirt mound on the side of the path . I petitioned him what he meant and he said that he didn’t know, but he just likes it. Later I started to think about what that could mean if it came from the mouth of someone slightly more sophisticated. I thought of their characteristics: free, full of life, free from worry of what will come tomorrow, transformed, gorgeous in curious ways. What in the world could describe the culture of butterflies? All I can think of is how they are just free. Free to be who they are, and they are transformed in that (the whole cocoon thing). So even though he had no idea what he was saying, it’s a pretty original idea . I think about how much I, and the people around me, are focused on tomorrow’s worries or success or beauty, and I think how cool it would be to be in the butterfly culture-Okay being who we are and just living life. Instead, we bog ourselves down with questions and stress. Let’s just be free in who we are- not trying to be one individual or another.
